But those who looked closely recognized: The real game changer wasn’t the iPhone. It was the iPad.

💡 iPad with Real Desktop Feeling

With iPadOS 26, the tablet finally becomes what Apple has avoided for years: an almost full-fledged computer. Windows, file manager, multitasking in the background – all things users have been demanding for over a decade. And now it’s finally here.

The new function of opening apps in individual, freely movable windows is strongly reminiscent of macOS – and that’s no coincidence.

iPad and MacBook are converging technologically and functionally more than ever. With the new iPadOS, many users could do without a classic notebook in the future. One device is enough – the iPad.

🔧 the most Important New Features in iPadOS 26

Window mode for all apps Apps can now be freely arranged, minimized or organized in tabs – just like on the desktop.

New file manager More control over folder structures, external drives and network access.

Background processes allowed Downloads or conversions continue even when the app is closed.

Mouse and trackpad support improved Operation feels even more natural – also with keyboard or stylus.

No more Pro exclusivity The new multitasking works on basic iPads too, not just on the Pro series.

🔍 why the Timing is No Coincidence

Apple faced a dilemma: iPads were becoming more powerful – with M1 and M2 chips even reaching MacBook level. But the software was holding them back. This was strategically intended. Because those who buy both iPad and MacBook leave more money in Cupertino.

But with increasing competition from hybrid devices like the Microsoft Surface or Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, it was clear: Apple had to catch up – or lose users.

Now Apple is taking the long-awaited step – and deliberately breaking down the barrier between iPad and MacBook. Without hardware upgrade. Just via software. This is a milestone.

💬 Comment: Apple Shows Courage for Unification

While the new “Liquid Glass” design of the iPhone is visually creating buzz, the progress with the iPad is a real functional gain. For many Apple users, this means: Fewer devices, more flexibility – and finally an iPad that’s more than just a big iPhone.

Conclusion: If you mainly work mobile, write emails, consume media and use apps, you no longer need a MacBook – the iPad is completely sufficient.

🔮 Outlook: iPad Becomes MacBook-Light

What does this mean for the coming years? Presumably, Apple will continue to develop both product lines in parallel – with increasingly similar software, but slightly different areas of use.

But the line is blurring. And for many users, the iPad will soon be the better, because more flexible laptop replacement.

At this year’s WWDC 2025, Apple put the spotlight on the future of all its devices – from Mac to Watch to iPhone.
