Not everyone can afford their own studio or workshop right away to turn their hobby into a profession. So the question often arises: How can I earn money with my photos?

Many dedicated hobby or amateur photographers dream of a life as a photographer: being self-employed, managing their own time, traveling a lot, doing work they enjoy – and also earning money. For many, this remains a dream, but it doesn't have to be.

Just get started with image marketing. You can market your own photos directly and immediately.

⚖️ Clarify the rights first

There are many ways to earn money with your own pictures. However, you should first make sure that you have sufficient rights to actually market your pictures.

With landscape or animal shots, this is usually not a problem. It becomes difficult when people are depicted in pictures. You need written consent from the depicted persons – as soon as they are recognizable.

For photos of buildings, a usage permit (Property Release) may also be necessary. For public buildings, this is usually not a problem – but would your neighbor want their house to suddenly appear in an advertisement?

⚠️ Note

Please note that this is not legal advice! In our experience, however, this is currently the common legal practice. For important projects, consult a lawyer if in doubt.

📜 The three license models

For your photos, you have to choose between different license models. There are usually three types:

Rights Managed

Costs depend on the scope, type, and duration of use. This license model is very difficult to control.

Royalty Free

You receive a one-time license fee, and the buyer then has unlimited possibilities to use the photos. This is probably the most common model.

Public Domain

You make the photos available completely free of charge. This is a good idea, especially at the beginning, to gain distribution and recognition.

You will always find the exact license terms with the respective provider.

🏢 Overview of image agencies

We recommend signing up with several agencies simultaneously – you can concentrate on one later.

🎯 What you should pay attention to

The image agencies with the most visitors and customers are currently iStock and Adobe Stock (formerly Fotolia). Recently, Fiverr has also been gaining more and more users.

Always read the agencies' terms of use carefully before signing up. Some platforms demand exclusivity – this limits your options elsewhere.
