If your PC is sluggish when booting up, there's almost always the same reason: you have too many active autostart programs. These are programs that automatically launch every time Windows and your PC start. Each application takes time, and with too many programs, you might have to wait a very long time until your PC is ready for use. Therefore, we'll show you how to speed up your PC's startup on Windows 10 using built-in tools.

A simple solution is offered by the Windows 10 Task Manager

  1. Open the Windows 10 Task Manager using the so-called "three-finger salute" (Ctrl + Alt + Del) or by right-clicking on the taskbar.
  2. Then go to "more details" and switch to the "Startup" tab. All further steps will now be initiated from this interface.

Identify bottlenecks

In the Startup tab of the Task Manager, you will find all programs that automatically launch during system startup. Having some programs in startup (e.g., antivirus software) is certainly important. Other programs, however (multimedia tools, Microsoft Office, etc.), are optional. You can also start them manually.

With "High," "Medium," and "Low" under the "Startup impact" column, Windows itself provides a recommendation on how much individual autostart programs slow down the PC during startup.

But it can be even more precise. To do this, simply click into the top column and add "CPU at startup" to the view. In the column that now appears, you will see (in milliseconds) how long a program additionally occupies your PC's processor during Windows startup. With this data, you can now specifically identify bottlenecks.

By right-clicking on the respective program, you now have the option to disable the app for autostart. As long as you keep this setting, this program will no longer be loaded automatically when the PC starts. The processor will be relieved by the corresponding number of milliseconds, and the PC will start a little faster.

The more apps you disable here, the more significantly you can speed up Windows 10 for your next PC startup.
