Die Welt des Smart Homes: Die beliebtesten intelligenten Geräte stellen sich vor - Engelmann Software
You've probably already heard of the Smart Home trend: it's the intelligent networking of individual devices within a house, which are then monitored, controlled, and operated centrally via a control system like smartphone apps. Through the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless connectivity, your home becomes smarter and more user-friendly. But Smart Home is more than that: it has become a living and lifestyle concept that enhances the comfort, security, energy efficiency, and user-friendliness of residents – through the use of smart devices. But which devices are suitable for a Smart Home and how do they improve your daily life? In this blog post, we would like to briefly introduce you to the most popular Smart Home devices and how they work. And at the end of the post, we have a little surprise for you 😉

An overview of the most popular Smart Home devices

The number of manufacturers and the type of products that can be used for a Smart Home system is theoretically unlimited. It depends on various factors such as the size of a house, the user's budget, the compatibility of the devices with each other, or the desired degree of automation. Below, we present the six most commonly used device types in Smart Homes. Typically, smart systems communicate wirelessly. Or they are wired or integrated into the home's Wi-Fi.[/caption]

1. Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats enable automated control of room temperature. They adapt to user behavior and take into account weather forecasts and other factors (presence of residents, time of day, sun exposure, energy prices, etc.). Smart thermostats can thus reduce energy costs by optimizing energy consumption, while simultaneously increasing comfort. Features such as remote access via smartphone apps, learning capabilities of thermostats, and integration into smart home platforms are now standard.

2. Smart Lighting Systems

Smart lighting systems include intelligent light bulbs and switches that can be remotely controlled and automated. They allow users to adjust lighting, set schedules, and even change the color of the lighting for different moods or activities. Features such as color change, dimmability, and voice control are currently in high demand. They also allow for energy savings.

3. Security Cameras

Security and surveillance cameras are an essential component of a Smart Home system's security concept. Security cameras are typically network cameras or IP cameras – in some cases, also CCTV cameras. Integrated into the Smart Home, these cameras offer both: real-time monitoring and recording of activities. Modern security cameras offer:
  • HD resolution: Up to 4K for clear, detailed images
  • Night vision: via infrared LEDs
  • Various storage options: SD card, hard drive, cloud
  • Built-in microphones and speakers: for communication even from a distance
  • Motion detection: The camera only starts recording or saving images upon motion and reacts according to predefined settings
  • Zone settings: For specific areas, it can be separately defined what should happen upon motion detection. For example, movements of people at night at the back of the house will trigger different reactions than movements during the day in living rooms and children's rooms.
  • Masking: certain areas in the camera's field of view are blocked (masked) so that they are not displayed, e.g., in recorded videos or live streams (keyword data protection or personal privacy).
  • Control via app on your smartphone or tablet

4. Smart Locks

Smart door locks offer a convenient and secure way to control access to your home. For example, they allow unlocking the door via an app on your smartphone, via PIN codes, or even via biometric authentication. In some places, they even replace the traditional key. Programming schedules, virtual keys, and notifications for certain activities are also features that smart locks offer. They thus provide added comfort and increase security.

5. Smart Plugs

Smart plugs are components that make conventional electrical devices intelligent. For example, they allow users to control these devices remotely and set schedules. Integration is incredibly simple: users can simply plug a smart plug into an existing outlet and then switch the connected device on and off via an app on their smartphone. Some models also offer additional features such as energy monitoring, schedules, and power consumption information. We are planning a more in-depth article specifically on this topic in the near future – so feel free to check back with us from time to time.

6. Smart Home Speakers

Smart Home speakers (individually or as a set) are the central control unit for your Smart Home. The most popular and well-known models are the Amazon Echo (Alexa), Cortana from Microsoft, or Google Assistant. Here you can perform various tasks via voice commands, such as:
  • playing music,
  • adding (or removing) appointments to the calendar,
  • adding (or removing) items to the digital shopping list,
  • retrieving the weather forecast,
  • querying routes and the current traffic situation,
  • controlling other Smart Home devices (heating, lights, TV, coffee machine)
  • and much more.
Smart Home speakers are therefore often connected to other Smart Home devices. In this way, the smart speaker becomes the central control unit. This simplifies the operation and automation of the Smart Home. In addition, the speakers naturally also do what they were originally designed for: they offer high-quality sound when playing music.
